The famous diamond of the ancient world, today set in the crown of the British Queen Elizabeth. The meaning of the name – mountain of light. The Kohinoor is a diamond that weighs 186.1 carats, but after undergoing many transformations and various polishings, it currently weighs 105 carats. It used to be the largest diamond in the world. The diamond was mined in southern India and passed from hand to hand between the rulers of India and its princes, and heavy wars were fought between them because of it. To this day, there is a debate, whether the stone was given in 1850 as a gift by Maharaja Duleep Singh to Queen Victoria, or if it was stolen by the British: it was taken as booty by Lord Delosi, who served in Punjab, India, on behalf of the British government. In any case, one way or another the stone reached the queen’s crown. The Indian government has applied several times to the British government for the return of the diamond, but as of today the diamond is in the crown of the Queen of England.
