Cabin 'Gizat HaZahav'

In Greek mythology, the golden fleece was the remains of the wool of the legendary stag Chrysomalus, which served as a reason for the journey of Jason and other mythological heroes to the city of Colchis on the ship Argo, a journey known as the Argonauts’ journey. The story of the journey and the background to it is often referred to as the Golden Fleece. To Athamas, king of Boeotia and his first wife Napela, were born a son, Phrixus, and a daughter, Hela. After the death of their mother, the king married Ino. Due to their stepmother’s hatred towards them, Phrixus and Hela fled for their lives, riding on top of a legendary stag. A deer endowed with the ability to think and speak, could fly, and its coat was gold. The reindeer carried the two children to Colchis, in the Crimea. On her way Hela fell into the sea and drowned, the water strait is named after her name – Hellaspontos – “Sea of Hela”. Phrixus arrived safely at Colicchus, and was generously received by King Aetes. He and the deer lived peacefully until the end of his days. When the stag got old he asked Phrixus to sacrifice it to Zeus. Aytes hung his golden fleece on an oak tree in the sacred grove of Ares. A dragon was entrusted with guarding the Golden Fleece.
